Subject: Sunday workshop on digital libraries and active learning at ESA
Annual Meeting
Sunday, August 5, 2007: 1:00 PM-5:00 PM
B1&2, San Jose McEnery Convention Center
WK 16 - Using digital libraries in undergraduate teaching: A roadmap for
faculty
Digital teaching materials can serve as a great resource for curriculum
development. Unfortunately, commercial search engines do not distinguish
between educational resources that are scientifically and pedagogically
sound and those that are not. Digital libraries provide educators with
immediate, organized access to high-quality resources that are
peer-reviewed for scientific accuracy and pedagogical value. This
workshop will highlight the services provided by digital teaching
libraries with particular emphasis on how digital resources can be used
to construct innovative lessons that increase student-active learning.
Participants will be introduced to several digital libraries relevant to
ecology and biodiversity conservation courses in higher education and
given an overview of student-active teaching strategies. Participants
will then explore the libraries to find resources that could be used to
make a pre-existing lesson more student-active. Participants are
encouraged to bring a lesson of their own to work with. With guidance
from workshop organizers and input from other participants, attendees
will be given the opportunity to explore digital libraries, locate
useful resources for their own teaching, and customize interactive
teaching strategies for their lesson topic. All levels of experience
with digital libraries and student-active teaching are welcome. Digital
libraries featured in this workshop will include: EcoEd.net, ESA's
digital teaching library (http://www.ecoed.net); BEN, the biology portal
of the National Science Digital Library (http://www.biosciednet.org/);
and NCEP (http://ncep.amnh.org/), the Network of Conservation Educators
and Practitioners run by the American Museum of Natural History.
Participants are requested to bring their own laptops, preferably with
wireless capability.

Registration for the workshop is $15 and will cover light snacks and
