[Ecoed] "Ecology in the Movies"

Just to add my two cents, since you are mentioning reading rather than  
just movie watching, I highly recommend, the book (and less so the  
movie) "Dune" by Frank Herbert. Herbert constructs an alien ecology  
that is fascinating, yet retains some of the elements of an extreme  
earth-like desert environment. Science fiction in general would be a  
good source for discussion, because a good writer tries to create  
something new while at the same also tries to maintain a strong  
connection to science. Students could be tested to see where they see  
an author "breaking the rules" as well as where he/she maintains that  
essential link to science.
