Hi, Jennifer!
In Virginia, high school students use probeware (Pasco, etc.) to collect
data on such things as humidity, dew point, turbidity, pH, temperature,
DO, etc.., when they conduct research in the field. They study such
things as water quality in the Chesapeake Bay. Each student in Virginia
is supposed to have a "meaningful watershed experience" before
graduation from high school. This can be at any grade level. We have a
proposal in to NSF to conduct various ecological studies with 7th
graders, since Virginia's SOL's (Standards of Learning) emphasize
ecology at that grade level.

Subject: [Ecoed] Data collection ideas for students grades 6-12
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for ideas for research that students in grades 6-12 could
participate in. Specifically, what are some examples of ecological data
that students in those grade levels could collect? Also, what equipment
and/or tools would be needed? Either low or high-tech collection methods
would be equally helpful. The collection of the data would serve two
purposes: both the educational experience for students and also the
contribution of data to a research project. This would be part of a
pilot project that would integrate education and research in the
mid-Atlantic region of the US, but we hope it would grow to include
other regions.
Any insight or suggestions are welcome and appreciated. You could
respond to the list at large to start a discussion, or to me at
jennifer at esa.org if you prefer.
Thanks!
Jennifer
