Reading Darwin's book is far from torture! It is a clear and careful argument written in vernacular language. It is a joy to read, and well worth the time. We routinely read portions in our classes, and get positive comments from students about that reading.
I like the first edition - darwin softened some of his arguments in response to criticism, and many think that this weakened them.
The BBC had an excellent miniseries "the voyage of charles darwin" (~1982) that is also useful.
