One sentence below should read: "Submissions received after June 16th will be reviewed in the fall." Sorry about any confusion that may have caused. The next deadline will be in late August, so any submission received after June 16th will be reviewed in the fall.

Subject: [Ecoed.net Advisory Board] EcoEd Digital Library update
Hi everyone,
I hope you are all having a good summer so far. Things have been busy at ESA since our last phone call last fall-we've moved into downtown DC, with all of the DC-areas staff all in a new office now. I'd like to get your final feedback on the figure and table review criteria that I've revised since out last call, update you all on recent EcoEd Digital Library developments, and ask for your schedules so I can set up a June phone call.
1. Please let me know when you're NOT free for a phone call in the first two weeks of June. I expect it'll be about an hour, as usual. I'll send an agenda soon. The main purpose will be to ask your input on student activity review criteria for this fall. I'll send you a draft of that next week.
2. In the meantime, I've attached the figure and table review criteria we discussed last fall, and they're also up on the development site (http://dev.ecoed.net/dewey/pages/rubric_figure). This is the revision based on your comments. Please let me know by June 6 if there's anything you think should be changed in this version.
3. EcoEd development updates
We've created a new role for the peer review process, the Visual Resource Editor, and Ken Klemow has agreed to serve as the first Editor, with a two-year term. The Visual Resource Editor will make editorial decisions about acceptance, rejection, and revision of resources submitted to the library. I will still handle the direct correspondence with authors and reviewers, make any final edits to submissions before validation, and make sure submissions are complete before reaching the Editor. The Visual Resource Editor will cover visual submissions to Ecoed Digital Library: photographs, figures, tables, and maps. The expectation is that as the catalog and resource diversity grow, additional editors will be required. I think we'll need a classroom activity editor this fall, for example.
Since Ken will be the new Visual Resource Editor, he will no longer be serving as the Advisory Board chair. He will still be on the Advisory Board, though. David Kirschtel of the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI) has agreed to lead as the Advisory Board chair. I look forward to the great ideas and input David will bring to the group. Ken has contributed a lot to the library in its early stages of development, and I'm looking forward to working with him during the review and editing process.
Also relevant to submissions, we completed our first peer review cycle this winter! We accepted 8 photographs out of 10 received, and 4 faculty reviewers helped with this process. I was handling the correspondence for this over email, with an intern's help, and that method was not very efficient. We have a new catalog plugin that should streamline this process considerably. Ken and I will be testing it out this summer.
Cataloging. Our intern, Antonio Cordero and I have cataloged the 2003-2007 cover photos from ESA journals, ESA's Issues (summary reports written by groups of ecologists knowledgeable in an area), and what was left from older Volumes of TIEE. The catalog has increased by almost 75% since we installed the new cataloging software, and we now have some good examples of photographs to use as examples in future peer review. In addition, this summer I will be working with Dan Perlman (Ecolibrary) and NCEP to add some of their resources to our catalog that we think will benefit both EcoEd and each of the other libraries.
Today I will also announce our second round of photograph review on the ESA listservs. The next deadline, for the second round of photo review, will be June 16. This round will be our first with a faculty editor and peer review software. The submission information is up on the site: http://www.ecoed.net/pages/guidelines_photo
Lastly, this fall we will accept figures, tables, and student activities for the first time. Student activities will not be an open call-- I will ask participants in a session at our Annual Meeting in August to submit resources of this type. Ken will be submitting some figures and tables for review this summer to help seed the collection for the fall submisions.
Please let me know about the new criteria and your available times soon, and I look forward to a June phone call to discuss student activity criteria.
